In einer ausführlichen paläographischen und kunsthistorischen Untersuchung werden hier die Handschriften gesichert und ausführlich beschrieben, die im Kloster Salem unter Abt Eberhard von Rohrdorf entstanden sind. Mehr als 40 Manuskripte spiegeln das kulturelle Interesse der Zisterzienser im 13. Jahrhundert, aber auch den Einfluss des bedeutenden Abtes wider, der sogar eine klostereigene literarische Produktion förderte. Die Handschriften zeigen, in welchem Kommunikations- und Beziehungsgeflecht das Kloster sowohl innerhalb der Kulturlandschaft des Bodenseeraums als auch im Zisterzienserorden stand.

Although the work reads more like a collection of essays than a coherent monograph, each section is well researched and written, with detailed bibliography and substantiated arguments. At the outset it should be noted that the book itself is beautifully produced, with a gold-embossed red cloth binding, a color plate on the front cover, and many black-and-white-images at the back. It is unfortunate that the subtitle does not appear on the cover or spine, however, because the primary title gives the impression that the book is a general study of Cistercian book production instead of a case study of a specific abbey.
